It was about noon, but the whole area became dark until three o’clock in the afternoon. There was no sun! The curtain in the temple was torn into two pieces. Jesus shouted, “Father, I give you my life.” After Jesus said this, he died. (Luke 23:44-46)
These few words are filled with great richness. Jesus’ death occurs in deep darkness; darkness has its way for a brief spell before its stranglehold on us is broken forever by Jesus’ resurrection. The veil is torn in the Temple; Jesus opens up the way for us to enter the Holy of Holies with confidence and find grace at the Mercy Seat of God. In his final breath, Jesus entrusts everything to his Father in faith; in our worst of moments, we can know that no matter how forsaken we may feel, God will bring us to himself in glory. Jesus takes his last breath and dies; each of us must one day give up our last breath, but because of Jesus’ death and subsequent resurrection, we can die with confidence. Which message do you need most today? Choose one and look to Jesus and trust in his grace.

What can we do to put ourselves in a position to hear God’s voice? We have to make time in our daily lives to get quiet. David said of the Lord in Psalm 23:2, “He leads me beside quiet waters.” Today I want to encourage you to find those quiet waters where you can get alone with the Lord. It may be a room in your house, outside under the trees, or some other place where you can shut out the noise and distractions of the world for just a few precious minutes. The key to renewing your mind, body and spirit is to develop the habit and discipline of meditating on the Word of God every day — even if it is for just a moment.

Spirit Speaks - All Sons and Daughters
With every breath I breathe
With every song I sing
I want to shout it out
Lord I am listening
To every word you speak
I’ll go where you will lead
To love the least of these
Is my greatest offering

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 36:26, NIV)
In life, we all have negative things happen to us. We go through situations that are unfair. I know people who were raised in an unhealthy environment. Their parents had issues, and now it’s making it much more difficult on them.
But here is what I’ve learned: when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, He gives you a new heart. In other words, your blood line changes. No longer are you subject to your earthly heritage, you become subject to your heavenly heritage! His spiritual blessing always overrides the curse in the natural realm. When you understand who you are and what God has already done, then no matter what someone else has done, no matter how unfair it was, no matter how you were raised, you won’t get bitter. You won’t live with a chip on your shoulder. You realize that nothing can stop you from fulfilling your God-given destiny!
Today, remember you came from Almighty God. He gave you life. When you choose Him, you are choosing your heavenly heritage of blessing and eternal, abundant life!
